Commitment to Sustainability: Eco-Friendly Practices in Floral Design

When you think of flowers, you naturally think of pure, fresh, earth-given beauty. Nature is the ultimate canvas, and as floral designers, our entire trade relies on the gifts of the environment. Because I spend my days celebrating "life's events in flowers," I feel a deep responsibility to nurture and protect the very planet that makes our art possible.

The traditional floral industry, however, has historically produced significant waste.

I believe that extraordinary, high-end floral design shouldn't come at the expense of the earth. Today, I want to give you a behind the scenes look at how I am intentionally weaving sustainable, eco-friendly practices into every step of the creative process.

1. Prioritizing Local and Seasonally Grown Blooms

Shipping flowers across oceans requires massive energy consumption, heavy carbon emissions from refrigerated air travel, and chemical treatments to keep blooms fresh during long journeys.

• Sustainable Practice: Whenever possible, especially during peak growing seasons, I source flowers from local flower farms right here in our community. Choosing locally grown blooms supports our regional agricultural economy, ensures you receive the freshest, most vibrant stems possible, and dramatically reduces our carbon footprint. Depending on availability and the desires of the client, I source as much locally as possible, but making sure I find the best product possible.

2. Eco-Conscious Packaging and Accessories

From plastic stem sleeves to disposable ribbon and cellophane wrap, single-use plastics are rampant in floral deliveries.

• Sustainable Practice: I mindfully curate every touchpoint of our brand. We favor recyclable paper wraps, natural jute and twine, reusable glass vessels, and eco-friendly accessories. When delivering arrangements, I aim to minimize plastic packaging without compromising the safety and presentation of your blooms.

3. Repurposing and Event Circularity

One of the saddest moments of any celebration is seeing breathtaking wedding flowers discarded at the end of the night.

• Sustainable Practice: I actively work with our couples and event hosts to extend the lifecycle of their florals! During design consultations, we strategize how ceremony aisle arrangements can be repurposed for reception bar setups or sweetheart tables. Post-event, we encourage clients to donate their flowers to local nursing homes, hospices, or community centers so their beauty can continue spreading joy for days to come.
