The First Step to Fabulous Flowers: What to Prepare Before Your Floral Consultation
Share
Congratulations! You’ve set the date, picked the venue, and now you’re ready for the most fragrant part of wedding planning: the flowers. Whether you know exactly what a Ranunculus looks like or you just know you want "something pretty," your floral consultation is where the magic starts to take shape.
To help us make the most of our time together and ensure your vision comes to life perfectly for your upcoming wedding, here is a guide on what to prepare before we sit down to chat.
1. Confirm Your Venue and Date
Before we talk about flower types, we need to know the "where" and "when."
- The Venue: The architecture and lighting of your venue (like the historic charm of St. James 1868 or a modern Milwaukee loft) heavily influence the style of arrangements that will look best.
- The Date: Seasonal availability is everything in floral design. Knowing your date allows me to tell you exactly which blooms will be at their peak freshness.
2. Define Your Color Palette
You don't need to have specific flower names ready, but having a color direction is essential. Are you dreaming of "moody jewel tones," "classic all-white," or "soft "sunset pastels"?
Pro-Tip: Bring fabric swatches of your bridesmaid dresses or a photo of your linens. Seeing the exact shade of "dusty rose" or "sage green" you’re using helps me select the perfect floral match.
3. Create a Visual "Mood Board"
A picture is worth a thousand words. Whether it’s a Pinterest board, a collection of Instagram saves, or clippings from a magazine, show me what catches your eye.
- Look for patterns: Do you consistently pin "wild and airy" bouquets or "tight and formal" ones?
- Note the "No-Gos": It is just as helpful to know what you don’t like as what you do!
4. Know Your "Floral Party" Count
To provide an accurate estimate, I’ll need a rough headcount for your personal flowers. Think about:
- How many bridesmaids and groomsmen?
- Are there flower girls or ring bearers?
- Do you need corsages or boutonnieres for parents, grandparents, or ushers?
5. Establish a Budget Range
Having a clear budget range allows me to be your best advocate. If I know your target, I can suggest creative ways to get the look you love—like using "high-impact" blooms in focal areas and more cost-effective greenery in others. On average, couples set aside 10–15% of their total wedding budget for florals.
6. Consider Your Reception Layout
Will you have long farm tables or classic rounds? Will there be a sweetheart table or a full head table? The shape and size of your tables dictate whether we should look at low, lush garden bowls or tall, dramatic pedestals.
Why Preparation Matters
When you come prepared, we can spend our consultation dreaming big and refining the artistic details rather than checking off basic logistics. It allows me to truly understand the feeling you want your guests to have when they walk into the room.
